Brisbane

We arrived in Manly around 9 pm and decided to spend our Friday night in. The hostel looked pretty ghetto, and the kitchen looks kind of gross, but for some reason I still don't mind. I feel so lucky to be able to just travel.

Unfortunately, Angel(a) left us halfway through our stay in Surfer's Paradise to spend the rest of it in Cairns, so we did not have any set plans for our stay Brisbane except for the free sailing on Sundays that this hostel offered. The real reason why we chose this hostel was because Rachel insisted on the sailing. No complaints here!

Each morning consisted of us waking up early to free breakfast and trying to figure out what to do. The first day our rental car's tire was slashed. Ironically, the night before, the hostel manager told us to park in the parking lot because it was safer... Yup... After calling the rental company and switching to the spare tire, we made our way  to the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. I touched a snake for the first time!

Luckily for us there was a Brisbane Festival going on for the month of September and we happened to make the final day. There was so much going on, and everywhere was packed with people, especially the manmade beaches. We walked around Southbank where the festival was going on and played cards in the field to waste time waiting to get dinner.

I was able to go inside of an army tank. Woot woot! Too bad that little punk ruined my moment. There were fighter jet planes and helicopters rented for the occasion. It was so cool. I swear, if I had 20/20 vision and didn't mind dying, I would want to be a fighter jet pilot. That would be boss.

Sunday is sailing day! We walked to the Manly Yacht Club and took part in the weekly boat race. Rachel, Dennis, and I was on one boat with the nicest old men you could've possibly ever met. Then we spent the night watching movies.

On our last full day in Brisbane, we explored Kangaroo Point. It was a nice view, but the weather wasn't looking so great. I wanted to rock climb, since that's what its known for, but it was for experienced climbers. :( I went to my first casino, Treasury Hotel and Casino! Too bad I didn't hve any money to gamble with, except some change for the slot machines. Nevertheless, it was pretty fun, especially watching Dennis win a at the slot machine. After, we to the Brisbane Museum, which was all right, nothing too interesting for me, but its good to have some culture. Plus, it was free, and that is always good.

We spent the rest of the day on a ferry along the river. At dinner, we convinced Dennis, that Rachel, from the Phillipines, and I, a Vietnamese American, were first cousins, and that my birthday was coming up in four days. Hahaha.

That night, I convince everyone to watch a movie at the hostel, but I ended up falling asleep, and apparently 10 minutes later, I felt a pencil on my face and woke up to the Norwegians carrying the couch with me in it away... -_-

Our last day in Brisbane consisted of us buy food and playing at the park. Right before we flew to Cairns, we had to buy a spare tire... Damn whoever slashed our tires...

Brisbane is really nice, very similar to Boston, but aren't all big cities very similar? Our ghetto hostel was actually in Manly, where the older crowd would roam.  Surfer's was better for me. Although it was not what I expected, I loved the experience. And it was a huge plus that I had good company, that and I finally got my refund back from the government for school. $3000 richer, baby!
